Each SCE circuit area is labeled with the nearest of about 55 communities in SCE territory (within 15 km). Our approximation, to help you find your area; SCE’s outage map and address search are the official answer.

SDG&E

San Diego and southern Orange County.

SDG&E does not publish its circuits under consideration as open data (its site blocks automated requests), so we cannot map them. What Cal OES does carry is SDG&E’s outages: per Cal OES, its PSPS outages are the ones whose cause mentions “unsafe conditions”. Right now Cal OES lists no SDG&E outage for unsafe conditions.

NOTE: This forecast is based on weather conditions and fuel moisture content only. It does not include other criteria used to determine whether a PSPS may be necessary. This forecast only provides a broad overview for a potential PSPS event in the next 7 days. It is determined from an analysis of forecast weather, the potential for wind-related damage, and fuel moisture content in dead and live vegetation. It is not a fire danger forecast.

What a PSPS is

With the continuing threat of wildfire, the electric investor-owned utilities (IOUs) may proactively cut power to electrical lines as a measure of last resort if the utility reasonably believes that there is an imminent and significant risk that strong winds may topple power lines or cause major vegetation-related issues leading to increased risk of wildfires. This effort is called a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS).

Quick questions

Is there a PSPS power shutoff in California right now?

As of Oct 14, 10:07 AM PDT: PG&E had 63,984 customers in a PSPS Watch, SCE was considering shutoffs for 245,138 customers and had 0 shut off, and Cal OES listed 0 SDG&E customers out for unsafe conditions. Check your exact address with your utility.

Is Malibu under a PSPS?

As of Oct 14, 10:07 AM PDT, SCE had 3 circuit areas near Malibu (Cuthbert, Galahad, Merlin) under consideration for a shutoff, with about 5,672 customers. “Near Malibu” is our grouping of SCE’s circuit shapes; check your address on SCE’s outage map.

What is a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS)?

In the words of the California Public Utilities Commission, utilities “may proactively cut power to electrical lines as a measure of last resort if the utility reasonably believes that there is an imminent and significant risk that strong winds may topple power lines or cause major vegetation-related issues leading to increased risk of wildfires.”

What is the difference between a PG&E PSPS Watch and Warning?

PG&E’s own wording: under a Watch, “due to high winds and dry conditions, a shutoff is likely”; under a Warning, “a shutoff is required”. Elevated means PG&E is monitoring the weather.

How do I know if my address will lose power?

Only your utility can tell you for your exact address: PG&E (pgealerts.alerts.pge.com address lookup), SCE (sce.com outage map) and SDG&E (sdge.com/psps). Areas on this map are approximate and come from their public maps.

Where does this data come from and how often is it updated?

From the utilities’ own public maps (PG&E and SCE ArcGIS layers, PG&E’s 7-day outlook) and Cal OES. We redraw them every 30 minutes and never change a number; sums by county are ours.
